Canon EOS Rebel XS

Released June, 2003
The Pros:Affordable price - similar cameras would have been over $1000 only 2-3 years ago. RAW format support. Comparable image to the more advanced XSi - indistinguishable.
The Cons:Smaller screen, sensor and fewer AF points than the XSi. Fully featured DSLR will not be as simple as other cameras in the price range. No video recording.
